The National Distance Education University (UNED)
This University is considered the largest distance learning of Spain and Spain's largest university in terms of students with more than 260,000 students and employs more than 10,000 people in charge of supporting the students from the headquarters central and associated centers in their training.
Students who study in our institution can be classified in one of these groups:
• Professionals and students who have finished high school.
• Students who combine studies.
• People who return to college.
• Unemployed (retraining and recycling).
• Students with special needs or who do not have a college classroom in the place where they live.
• Internal in prisons.
Annually UNED enrolled in a total of 27 EHEA bachelor's degrees, 53 master's degrees, 44 doctoral programs, more than 600 continuing education courses, 12 courses of languages, more than 100 summer courses, nearly 400 University Extension activities courses, college access for those over 25 and 45 years or Senior UNED courses for over 55 years.
At the beginning of the 70s was decided to create the Free University Distance, on whose shield is a dove. The idea curdled, but not the name and the logo. Finally, in August 1972, a decree law gives life to the National University of Distance Education. At first they are only 3 offices: one for the Rector, another for the General Secretariat and the other for the Press Office. Located in the Big House in San Bernardo, in the downtown district of Madrid; will share space with the National Education Council.
The UNED newborn devoted his early years to increase the number of students, which is growing in geometric progression. It must then adapt its structure to the teaching needs. He created the first two “vicerrectorados”, one of Humanities and another of Sciences, and opens a public service office. The lesson plans are sent to the student home, by mail, free.
The next step is to bring higher education to the villages, away from the big cities, which do not have college. The regional centers will serve to establish the Open University and its unique teaching method throughout the peninsula and islands. These centers work with mentors who guide and warn students.
There comes a time to look beyond and work in the international structure. Latin America is the next target. The UNED is implemented in some countries and methodological model "exports": becomes AIESAD leader (American Association of Higher Distance Education).
Ensuring equal opportunities is one of the explicit goals of this university. The UNED has provided access to higher education to people who would not have been able to get it for reasons of income, by place of residence or any other difficulty.
The UNED has boosted particularly the incorporation of women to the university and the labor market. It is no coincidence that in 1982 was elected Rector of UNED Elisa Pérez Vera, the first woman who came to this position in the Spanish university.
The other major objective is also true: their listings are full of people who alternate workday with their university education. Its programs become the second chance for many people eager to know that, at the time, for various reasons, did not agree to the conventional higher education.
Within a decade the UNED has come a long way in its social, which will continue throughout the 80s: associated centers in almost all provinces, more centers abroad and an ongoing expansion of its educational offer, course after course, is adding new courses and new training programs.
Then begins the spread bet. The use of radio and television as content broadcast systems are added, at 90, the new technologies. The incorporation of multimedia systems, both in the preparation of materials and their distribution extends to all disciplines.
Digital systems and the Internet have made it possible, today, at the dawn of 2000, the "distance" between the Open University and its students is gone: each student has all the university as study table, just a "click "your computer keyboard.
