The sun in the big city. My European volunteering Service in MADRID
After the first few weeks I spent in this magical city, I can confirm that Madrid is a unique place on the map. My name is Anna, I come from Poznan (city in western Poland) and just started the annual adventure with the European Voluntary Service program in Madrid. Why I chose Spain ? The answer seems simple: the sun, music, delicious food and people always smiling. The culture and the Spanish language have always fascinated me so after graduating from the University of economic, I decided to find out for myself eyes how it feels to life in this southern country.
From the first moment I knew that this was the right decision. In the first week I had the opportunity to participate in an international seminar organized by my host organization "Building Bridges" in creating the youth portal EverEurope. At that time I also started collaborating as youth worker in two youth centers in Tetuan and Chamberí districts. In the coming months I will prepare a workshop to help with English language and a Polish cuisine course. During all this time I'm trying to improve my knowledge of Spanish (classes 4 times a week), explore the city and meet local people.
I spend time with my roommates are other EVS volunteers (Marleen and Louisa, from Germany; Andrea, from Italy and Yoann, from France). Together we visited the most important places in the city as the Puerta del Sol (0 km pictured), the Prado Museum, Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas and the Gran Via. But my favorite place right now is Parque del Retiro. There you can relax and enjoy the sun, which spoils us every day- I can feel here like in the middle of summer. I love this solar aura, which adds light and brightness to the city.
In addition to spending time in the capital of Spain, I intend to visit other lovely places like Lisbon (this trip we are planning to take 2 weeks), the sunny Andalusia and the green Galicia. The last week of October we sparticipate in on arrival seminar with other EVS volunteers, which takes place in Cercedilla, the mountain village about 60 kilometers north of Madrid.I hope that the coming months will be equally intense as my first time here!
