The Heritage through Art

The Heritage can be both tangible through architecture, decorative objects, and materials used, shapes etc. ... as intangible, knowledge, techniques and procedures.

Cultural heritage is not only a community's heritage transmitted over time, it is also an identity.

The Heritage however, even being an identity label, must be enriched over the course of time, adding the new essences which have been developed.

In Granada, we find an exquisite richness, blending inheritance of Christianity, Judaism and Arabic.

The Centre quarter or Christian quarter is characterized by the Cathedral, which is one of the masterpieces of Spanish Renaissance works and one of the legacies of Charles V. The cathedral is located above the old mosque next to the Royal Chapel, the Tabernacle, and the Market.

The Realejo or Jewish quarter used to be called al-Yahud Gharnatah until the 8th century when the Christians arrived which was renamed Realejo. One of the most important places is the Campo del Principe, located on an ancient Muslim cemetery.

The Albaicín, as Islamist, was founded upon arrival of the ziríes Berbers. This neighbourhood stands out for its beauty. White houses with steep narrow streets where you can lose and find yourself over and over again.

The Mirador de San Nicolasis a strategic place from where you can fully see the Alhambra, Sierra Nevada and parts of the city.

The Alhambra is the most representative palace of the Nasrid period. Red Fort is situated on a hill overlooking Granada. Formerly the residence and the court of the Arab rulers, is now one of the most important monuments in Spain. It consists of three parts: the Nasrid Palaces, the Alcazaba and the Generalife.

At its right side is located the Sacromonte quarter, a neighbourhood full of inhabited caves.

The Sacromonte is the gypsy quarter par excellence. Enrique Morente, Mario Maya, Rafael Amargo, Estrella Morente are among other the legacy of flamenco in Granada.

Enrique Morente is notably to be considered one of the great innovators of flamenco nowadays. His wanderings began very soon but in the 80s is when his flamenco personality begins to gain strength. Mixing flamenco with orchestras, with rock, with poems, with Bulgarian voices, with endless notes and forms.

He left us in 2011 but his legacy is evident in our flamenco and not only due to his daughter Estrella Morente but to the ornaments brought to it.

Visit us, and you will be able to taste the charm of a city pure of art and power.
