Sport and physical form
Healthy way of living and exercising has been cherished by Estonians for cultural reasons for almost decades now. Who of us has not taken part in village celebrations and thrown a boot or tug a rope or held a heavy beer barrel? Or even jumped over the campfire during Midsummers Eve. Whatever the activity is, it is still sportive and enjoyable.
We are already encouraged to be active since kindergarden and school. In addition to physical education classes, a lot of different sport-competitions, running, relays and even sportquizes are being held. Advocacy of healthy living and sport is respected in Estonian culture. Fortunately, rural municipalities have also started to “go with the movement” as they are building more and more pedestrian streets and cycle roads. It sure feels good to put on your rollerskates after a long working day and just let yourself go. Some people choose bicycle riding or running instead.
It is important to remember that sport does not always have to be on a professional level. A person is sportive even when he rides his bike to work, goes to group workout couple of times a week or uses one of our many gyms and sportclubs. Being active is substantial, because keeping good physical form keeps our body healthy, diseases far away and even our appearance fair.
A lot of people complain that it is hard to force yourself to work out after a long working day, even if the feeling is good afterwards. Exercising with friends and accquaintances is easier and more motivating! Therefore a lot of marathons and running competitions with thousand of competitors are being held. It is easy to put on your running gear, invite your friends and run calmly 10-12 km.
Estonians are a valued nation all over the world, because we have won several important competitions and received unique medals. Kristiina Šmigun-Vähi, Andrus Veerpalu, Elena Glebova, Gerd Kanter, Kaia Kanepi and many others are worth the fame and glory, because they have achieved great success.
Estonians are and will be a sport-nation on a national and international level!
