Migration is a worldwide phenomenon with about 3.1% of the world's population (some 214 million) living outside their place of birth. The flow is usually determined by the economy, as people move in order to find work and better living conditions. However, globalisation has also increased mobility across borders.

International Migrants’ Day
The UN has declared18 December International Migrants Day – to mark the day in 1990 when it adopted the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families. The idea behind the day is to spread information on migrants’ human rights and fundamental freedoms of migrants, through the sharing of experiences and campaigns to protect migrants’ rights.
On Radio 1812 you can listen to radio programmes from stations all over the world making migrants' voices heard.
Many migrants and their families are victims of a wide range of human rights abuses. Irregular and illegal migration has become one of the major issues of our time, with human trafficking becoming a significant worldwide concern.
