Municipal elections

EU citizens registered in Sweden have the right to vote in municipal and county council elections. They are automatically included on the electoral register for these elections.

You can vote in the municipal and county council elections if you are:

  • an EU citizen or a citizen of Iceland or Norway and you are registered in the municipality or county concerned
  • a citizen of a country other than those listed above and you have been registered in Sweden for 3 consecutive years before the day of the elections

You must meet the same conditions to stand for election as to have the right to vote.

You are not under any obligation to vote.
