Municipal elections

To be able to vote in municipal elections, foreign EU citizens need to register on the electoral roll at the municipal administration of their place of residence.

To be eligible to vote in municipal elections you must:

  • be at least 18 years old on election day;
  • not be disqualified from voting in Luxembourg or in another EU country;
  • live in Luxembourg (and have been resident there for more than 5 years for EU nationals).

Voting in municipal elections is compulsory for everybody on the electoral roll.

To be eligible to stand as a candidate in municipal elections you must:

  • be at least 18 years old on election day;
  • not be disqualified from standing as a candidate in Luxembourg or in another EU country;
  • have been living in the commune for 6 month for Luxembourgish residents, or for 5 years for other nationalities.

Foreign EU citizens can become mayors or members of the mayor's executive committee.
