Residence card for non-EU family members

Your family members must register their residence within 8 days of arrival.

The documents required to show there is a family relationship are as follows:

Husband / wife:

  • Application form
  • Signed form "Personal information for the issuing of a residence permit" together with a passport photograph
  • Copy of a valid passport or identity card
  • Original certificate of marriage

(Grand)children:

  • Application form
  • Signed form "Personal information for the issuing of a residence permit" together with a passport photograph
  • Copy of a valid passport or identity card
  • Original certificate of birth / Original proof of custody of the child and guarantee of maintenance if the child is not a child of both spouses

(Grand)parents:

  • Application form
  • Signed form "Personal information for the issuing of a residence permit" together with a passport photograph
  • Copy of a valid passport or identity card
  • Written justification
  • Proof of family relationship (for example: birth certificate, original family book)

Registered partners:

  • Application form
  • Signed form "Personal information for the issuing of a residence permit" together with a passport photograph
  • Copy of a valid passport or identity card (the latter option only for EEA and Swiss citizens)
  • Original document certifying the registered partnership

Non-registered partners:

  • Application form
  • Signed form "Personal information for the issuing of a residence permit" together with a passport photograph
  • Copy of a valid passport
  • Current criminal record extracts of both partners
  • Current debt enforcement register extracts of both partners
  • Current official document proofing the partners' civil status
  • Proof of existence of relationship since at least five years
  • Unconditional and irrevocable bank guarantee in the amount of at least 156'000 Swiss Francs

Family reunification for extended family members ( uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, etc.) is generally not possible.

The supporting documents you need to prove that a family member is economically dependent on you are:

  • Official document proofing the family relationship, the custody of the child or a guarantee of maintenance.

The registration certificate is valid for 5 years.

Check with the authorities responsible for issuing registration certificates: the Migration and Passport Office.
