Visiting a doctor

When you move to another EU country, the prescribed medicine might not be available, or it may bear another name. You can visit a doctor under the same conditions as other local residentsWhich country's health care system  ultimately pays for your medical treatment will depend on your economic status – it will usually be your new home country, if you have moved there to work, for example.

Health care and social security systems in Europe differ from country to country. In some countries you are expected to pay the doctor directly for treatment, although you may be used to a system where no money changes hands between doctor and patient.
