Access rights

Under EU law, you can seek medical treatment in another EU country if:

  • the specific treatment you need is not available in your home country, but is covered by your statutory health insurance, or
  • the medical circumstances of your case mean you might not receive the treatment in time.  Medical circumstances include your degree of pain, the nature of your disability (which might for example make it impossible or extremely difficult for you to work), the probable course of your disease, and your medical history.

If you want your home health insurer to cover the cost of hospital treatment abroad, you must ask for prior authorisation.

Once authorised to seek medical treatment in another EU country, you should be treated there on the same terms – and charged the same costs – as a person insured in that country.
