Statistics - Germany

Updated 10/2010

Legal requirements

National official statistics are recorded with the help of the Statistical Offices of the 16 federal Länder. Taking part in surveys is usually a legal requirement.

In Germany, responsibility for collecting national statistics lies with the Federal Statistical Office, a higher federal authority falling under the Ministry of the Interior. The Federal Statistical Office is responsible for producing and publishing the results at the federal level, and for collecting some of the figures itself. The Federal Statistics Act (BStatG) of 22 January 1987 sets out the obligations and competences (see particularly Section 3 on the tasks of the Federal Statistical Office).
