WEA is a UK’s largest voluntary-sector provider of adult education. It was founded in 1903, in order to support the educational needs of working men and women who could not afford to access further or higher education. Today they provide courses for all kinds of adults but they maintain our special mission to provide educational opportunities to adults facing social and economic disadvantage.
They run over 10,000 part-time adult education courses each year. Their 110,000 students reflect all ages and interests, and come to us from all walks of life. They are one of the UK’s biggest charities, and operate at local, regional and national levels through their regional offices and volunteer-led branches. Their courses are created and delivered in response to local need, often in partnership with local community groups and organisations.
The Digital Activist Inclusion Network (DAIN) is one of their most inportant project. It is an exciting volunteer project working across the East Midlands. DAIN aims to promote digital inclusion by encouraging people to use technology with the help of volunteers (Digital Activists) - they are primarily unemployed people with experience of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) who can commit a few hours a week. Digital Activists are active in local communites.
DAIN is an action research volunteer project part funded by the European Social Fund and designed to develop, test and deliver approaches to challenge the digital divide and help widen participation in employment and learning across the East Midlands.
