"ENA PIATO FAGHTO" = A PLATE OF FOOD
In the middle of the European - and global - crisis, many people can no longer provide for their mere sustenance: a plate of food a day. "Inspired" by a true story at our school, we investigated the issue and came up with an idea that could be put into practice by volunteers with no cost at all.
Our project is titled "A Plate of Food" and promises to deliver just that: volunteers donate a serving of the food they are cooking for their household and register their donation on the special platform (we built ours at wikispaces.com). By 10 a.m. all volunteers will have registered their donations; the appointed volunteer-"coordinator" then logs on and "matches" donations to meal recipients according to their dietary needs and distance from donor to recipient (recipients have been interviewed on any special dietary issues they may have by means of a questionnaire). He/she then fills in the daily "meal log" and delivers the meals; alternatively, the meals may be delivered by the donors door-to-door if distance allows (e.g. a meal donation system covering a large block of flats).
All the necessary material - questionnaires, meal logs and a "quick start guide" describing how the programme works - have been uploaded to our site (enapiatofaghto.wikispaces.com). The site language is Greek, however we plan to translate most of it into English in the near future. We are currently in "testing" stage, to see if the programme really works: our registered volunteers, who are none other than the students with Internet access participating in the project, register their donation every day, while no meal deliveries are being made yet. When the test run is complete, we intend to launch the programme in our local community. The material has been released under a Creative Commons license, for anyone to apply or improve upon.
The system will be presented at Athens Festival of Science and Technology (FEST11) on Saturday 17 Dec. 2011, as the second part of a presentation titled "The Open Community in the School of Today". The first part of the presentation shall discuss volunteer editing on Wikipedia and Wikimedia in the context of school classes and projects.
