The Supervisory Committee of OLAF was established to reinforce and guarantee OLAF's independence by regularly monitoring the implementation of OLAF's investigative function.

The Committee comprises 5 independent outside experts  (with the qualifications required in their respective countries for senior posts relating to OLAF's work) appointed by common agreement of the European Parliament, the Council and the Commission for 5 years.

Members are independent and may neither seek nor take instructions from any government or any institution, body, office or agency.

 

Our Role

  • OLAF's Supervisory Committee was established to reinforce and guarantee OLAF’s independence by regularly monitoring the implementation of OLAF's investigative function.
  • The Supervisory Committee delivers opinions to the OLAF Director General at the request of the Director or on its own initiative concerning OLAF's activities without, however, interfering with the conduct of investigations in progress.
  • The Supervisory Committee delivers a yearly opinion on the preliminary draft budget submitted by OLAF.
  • The Supervisory Committee adopts its own rules of procedure.
  • The Supervisory Committee is to be kept regularly informed of OLAF's activities, its investigations, the results thereof and the action taken on them.
  • The Supervisory Committee adopts an annual report on its activities which is sent to the EU institutions.
  • The Supervisory Committee may submit reports to the European Parliament, the Council, the Commission and the Court of Auditors on the results of OLAF's investigations and the action taken thereon.
