Statement of the spokesperson for the environment following inaccurate reports on progress of environmental files

In light of an inaccurate report on the state of play of a number of environmental files, the Director-General of DG Environment has clarified the Commission's track record.

Director-General Karl Falkenberg has stated the following:

"I think that the last years have been very successful in environmental awareness and protection in Europe, including through major new or updated EU regulation. Water, Air or most recently Waste legislation are good examples of ambitious legislative proposals adopted by the Commission. Nature legislation too has been strengthened for example with the regulation on invasive alien species. On a series of very technically complex files, work for the appropriate EU actions is ongoing. The statements that I have made have been misrepresented by putting them together with a wider set of arguments and non-attributed statements that I substantially do not share."
