Statement to the media after the EU-Algeria Association Council
Algeria and the EU share the objective of a deepening and strengthening their relations. We expressed today our common commitment to developing our bilateral relations.
To reach this objective, we have proposed to swiftly finish negotiations to adopt an ENP Action Plan that will incorporate a realistic, yet ambitious set of goals. The action plan will be targeted to Algeria's needs and ambitions.
We also proposed to intensify bilateral dialogue and cooperation in the fields of migration and mobility, as well as energy. These are crucial issues on which we hope that a more intense partnership with Algeria will bring solutions to meet existing challenges.
We have reiterated our offer to accompany Algeria's political reforms, notably the announced reforms of the Constitution. We also expect progress in terms of greater cooperation for the respect of human rights and democratic principles, improved governance and a more active involvement of the civil society, which we believe are crucial to meet the expectations of the Algerian people.
We have reviewed our financial cooperation and agreed to focus it on three important sectors: Justice reform and strengthening of citizen’s participation; labour market and employment; management and diversification of the economy.
During the political dialogue part of our meeting, we exchanged views on the state of play of regional cooperation in the Maghreb. We welcomed Algeria's involvement in the 5+5 Dialogue and in the Union for the Mediterranean. We also discussed the latest developments in Libya and in the Sahel.
