January 2013 compared with December 2012
Industrial producer prices up by 0.6% in both euro area and EU27
In January 2013, compared with December 2012, the industrial producer price index1 rose by 0.6% in both the euro area2 (EA17) and the EU272, according to estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In December 20123 prices fell by 0.2% in both zones.
In January 2013 compared with January 2012, industrial producer prices gained 1.9% in the euro area and 1.8% in the EU27.
As announced in the previous News Release, from January 2013 onwards indices for industrial producer prices are calculated and presented with 2010 as a new base year. See annex for more details.
Monthly comparison
In January 2013, compared with the previous month, prices in total industry excluding the energy sector increased by 0.2% in both the euro area and the EU27. Prices in the energy sector gained 1.6% and 1.5% respectively. In both zones, durable consumer goods rose by 0.3%, capital goods and non-durable consumer goods by 0.2% and intermediate goods by 0.1%.
Among the Member States for which data are available, the highest increases in the total index were observed in Estonia4 (+8.0%), Romania (+1.9%), Lithuania (+1.3%), the Czech Republic and Spain (both +1.1%). Decreases were recorded in Bulgaria (-0.8%), the Netherlands (-0.5%), Ireland and Cyprus (both -0.3%) and Hungary (-0.2%).
Annual comparison
In January 2013, compared with January 2012, prices in total industry excluding the energy sector increased by 1.4% in both the euro area and the EU27. Prices in the energy sector rose by 2.8% and 2.1% respectively. Non-durable consumer goods gained 2.4% in the euro area and 2.5% in the EU27. Intermediate goods rose by 1.3% in the euro area and by 1.2% in the EU27. Durable consumer goods gained 0.9% and 0.8% respectively. In both zones, capital goods increased by 0.7%.
Among the Member States for which data are available, the largest increases in the total index were observed in Estonia4 (+10.0%), Romania (+6.6%), Belgium (+5.4%) and Denmark (+4.9%). Decreases were recorded in Sweden (-0.9%), Hungary (-0.3%) and Greece (-0.1%).
The index of producer prices shows (in the national currency of the country concerned) changes in the ex-works sale prices of all products sold on the domestic markets of the various countries, excluding imports. Euro area and EU indices refer to overall weighted price changes. The figures are not adjusted. Missing observations from Member States for recent months are estimated for the calculation of the euro area and the EU.

The EU27 includes Belgium (BE), Bulgaria (BG), the Czech Republic (CZ), Denmark (DK), Germany (DE), Estonia (EE), Ireland (IE), Greece (EL), Spain (ES), France (FR), Italy (IT), Cyprus (CY), Latvia (LV), Lithuania (LT), Luxembourg (LU), Hungary (HU), Malta (MT), the Netherlands (NL), Austria (AT), Poland (PL), Portugal (PT), Romania (RO), Slovenia (SI), Slovakia (SK), Finland (FI), Sweden (SE) and the United Kingdom (UK).
Compared with data issued in the News Release 20/2013 of 4 February 2013, the monthly and annual growth rates for December 2012 remain unchanged in both zones.
4. The increase in industrial producer prices for January 2013 in Estonia is principally due to a change in the regulation of the electricity market.

Annex: New base year introduced in short-term business statistics
In order to reflect changes in the structure of the economy, and starting with the publication of data for the reference month January 2013, the base year for all short-term business statistics (STS) indices has been updated from 2005 to 2010. The individual Member States' shares in the euro area and the EU can be found in the table below.
