September 2012 compared with August 2012
Industrial producer prices up by 0.2% in euro area
Up by 0.3% in EU27
In September 2012, compared with August 2012, the industrial producer price index1 rose by 0.2% in the euro area2 (EA17) and by 0.3% in the EU272. In August3 prices increased by 0.9% and 1.1% respectively. These figures come from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.
In September 2012 compared with September 2011, industrial producer prices gained 2.7% in the euro area and 2.6% in the EU27.
Monthly comparison
In September 2012, compared with the previous month, prices in total industry excluding the energy sector gained 0.3% in both the euro area and the EU27. Prices in the energy sector remained stable in the euro area and rose by 0.5% in the EU27. In both zones, intermediate goods and non-durable consumer goods increased by 0.4%, while capital goods and durable consumer goods remained stable.
Among the Member States for which data are available, the highest increases in the total index were recorded in Denmark (+1.1%), the Netherlands (+0.9%) and Portugal (+0.6%). Decreases were recorded in Greece (-0.6%), Spain and Italy (both -0.1%), while prices remained stable in the Czech Republic, Ireland and Slovenia.
Annual comparison
In September 2012, compared with September 2011, prices in total industry excluding the energy sector increased by 1.2% in the euro area and by 1.3% in the EU27. Prices in the energy sector rose by 7.0% and 6.6% respectively. Non-durable consumer goods gained 2.4% in the euro area and 2.6% in the EU27. In both zones, durable consumer goods rose by 1.3%, capital goods by 0.9% and intermediate goods by 0.7%.
Among the Member States for which data are available, the largest increases in the total index were observed in Bulgaria (+6.6%), Cyprus (+6.3%) and Romania (+6.0%), and the smallest in Sweden (+0.5%), Malta, Austria and Slovenia (all +0.9%).
1. The index of producer prices shows (in the national currency of the country concerned) changes in the ex-works sale prices of all products sold on the domestic markets of the various countries, excluding imports. Euro area and EU indices refer to overall weighted price changes. The figures are not adjusted. Missing observations from Member States for recent months are estimated for the calculation of the euro area and the EU.

Compared with data issued in the News Release 140/2012 of 2 October 2012, the monthly growth rate for August 2012 remains unchanged at +0.9% in the euro area and has been revised from +1.0% to +1.1% in the EU27. The annual growth rate for August 2012 remains unchanged at +2.7% in the euro area and has been revised from +2.7% to +2.8% in the EU27.
