May 2010 compared with April 2010
Industrial producer prices up by 0.3% in euro area
Up by 0.2% in EU27
In May 2010 compared with April 2010, the industrial producer price index1 rose by 0.3% in the euro area2 (EA16) and by 0.2% in the EU272. In April 20103, prices increased by 1.0% and 0.8% respectively.
In May 2010 compared with May 2009, industrial producer prices rose by 3.1% in the euro area and by 3.7% in the EU27.
These figures come from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.
Monthly changes
In May 2010, compared with the previous month, prices in total industry excluding the energy sector increased by 0.4% in the euro area and by 0.5% in the EU27. Intermediate goods gained 0.8% in both zones. Durable consumer goods increased by 0.2% in the euro area and by 0.3% in the EU27. Non-durable consumer goods rose by 0.1% in the euro area and by 0.3% in the EU27. Capital goods gained 0.1% and 0.2% respectively. Prices in the energy sector remained stable in the euro area, but fell by 0.3% in the EU27.
Among Member States for which data are available, the highest increases in the total index were recorded in Hungary (+3.4%), Cyprus (+2.0%), Lithuania (+1.3%) and Slovenia (+1.2%). The only decreases were observed in Greece (-0.6%), Sweden and the United Kingdom (both ‑0.5%).
Annual changes
In May 2010 compared with May 2009, prices in total industry excluding the energy sector increased by 1.7% in the euro area and by 1.8% in the EU27. Prices in the energy sector gained 7.0% in the euro area and 8.6% in the EU27. Intermediate goods increased by 3.9% and 3.8% respectively. Durable consumer goods rose by 0.7% in the euro area and by 1.0% in the EU27. Capital goods increased by 0.2% and 0.5% respectively. Non-durable consumer goods fell by 0.1% in the euro area, but rose by 0.2% in the EU27.
Among Member States for which data are available, the largest increases in the total index were observed in Malta (+17.0%), Hungary (+9.1%), Greece (+7.3%) and Finland (+7.1%). The only decreases were observed in Slovakia (-3.1%) and Latvia (-1.2%).
The index of producer prices shows (in the national currency of the country concerned) changes in the ex-works sale prices of all products sold on the domestic markets of the various countries, excluding imports. Euro area and EU indices refer to overall weighted price changes. The figures are not adjusted. Missing observations from Member States for recent months are estimated for the calculation of the euro area and the EU.

The euro area (EA16) includes Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Cyprus, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Slovenia, Slovakia and Finland.
The EU27 includes Belgium (BE), Bulgaria (BG), the Czech Republic (CZ), Denmark (DK), Germany (DE), Estonia (EE), Ireland (IE), Greece (EL), Spain (ES), France (FR), Italy (IT), Cyprus (CY), Latvia (LV), Lithuania (LT), Luxembourg (LU), Hungary (HU), Malta (MT), the Netherlands (NL), Austria (AT), Poland (PL), Portugal (PT), Romania (RO), Slovenia (SI), Slovakia (SK), Finland (FI), Sweden (SE) and the United Kingdom (UK).
Data of previous months have been revised compared to those issued in the News Release 79/2010 of 2 June 2010. The monthly growth rates for April 2010 have been revised from +0.9% to +1.0% in the euro area and from +1.0% to +0.8% in the EU27. The annual growth rate remains unchanged at +2.8% in the euro area, while it has been revised from +3.7% to +3.6% in the EU27.
For Ireland, data in the new classification (NACE rev 2) has been estimated by Eurostat on the basis of data supplied using the old classification (NACE rev 1.1).
