September 2010 compared with August 2010
Volume of retail trade down by 0.2% in euro area
Down by 0.1% in EU27
In September 2010, compared with August 2010, the volume of retail trade1 decreased by 0.2% in the euro area2 (EA16) and by 0.1% in the EU272. In August3 retail trade fell by 0.2% in both zones.
In September 20104, compared with September 2009, the retail sales index rose by 1.1% in the euro area and by 1.3% in the EU27.
Monthly changes
In September 2010, compared with August 2010, “Food, drinks and tobacco” decreased by 0.1% in the euro area, but rose by 0.3% in the EU27. The non food sector declined by 0.3% in both zones.
Among the Member States for which data are available, total retail trade fell in eight and increased in twelve. The largest decreases were observed in Germany (-2.3%), Portugal (-1.4%) and Ireland (-1.0%), and the highest increases in Belgium (+1.9%), Poland (+1.6%) and Austria (+1.5%).
Annual changes
In September 2010, compared with September 2009, “Food, drinks and tobacco” rose by 0.1% in the euro area, but declined by 0.5% in the EU27. The non food sector increased by 2.6% and 3.5% respectively.
Among the Member States for which data are available, total retail trade rose in eleven and decreased in nine. The highest increases were observed in Poland (+9.9%), Belgium (+8.5%) and Latvia (+6.1%), and the largest decreases in Spain (-4.9%), Bulgaria (-4.7%) and Slovakia (-1.8%).

The seasonally adjusted euro area and EU series are calculated by aggregating the working day adjusted series from individual Member States and performing an adjustment for seasonal effects on these series. Therefore the European seasonally adjusted figures for total retail trade are based directly on the working day adjusted series coming from the Member States and not on an aggregation of the seasonally adjusted indices from the Member States. The euro area and EU seasonally adjusted growth rates might differ from the weighted growth rates of the individual Member States. This procedure also implies that the aggregation of total retail trade is not directly based on the published details (food, non-food, fuel).
The euro area (EA16) includes Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Cyprus, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Slovenia, Slovakia and Finland.
The EU27 includes Belgium (BE), Bulgaria (BG), the Czech Republic (CZ), Denmark (DK), Germany (DE), Estonia (EE), Ireland (IE), Greece (EL), Spain (ES), France (FR), Italy (IT), Cyprus (CY), Latvia (LV), Lithuania (LT), Luxembourg (LU), Hungary (HU), Malta (MT), the Netherlands (NL), Austria (AT), Poland (PL), Portugal (PT), Romania (RO), Slovenia (SI), Slovakia (SK), Finland (FI), Sweden (SE) and the United Kingdom (UK).
Data of previous months have been revised compared to those issued in the News Release 146/2010 of 5 October 2010. The monthly growth rates for August 2010 have been revised from -0.4% to -0.2% in the euro area and from -0.3% to -0.2% in the EU27. The annual growth rates have been revised from +0.6% to +1.3% in the euro area, and from +0.8% to +1.3% in the EU27.
