José Manuel Durão Barroso
President of the European Commission
Statement by President Barroso following his meeting with Horst Seehofer, Minister-President of Bavaria
Brussels, 11 July 2011
Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen,
It was indeed a pleasure to receive here once again Minister-President Seehofer. We had a very good conversation regarding some of the topics on the European Union agenda, namely I had the occasion to explain to Minister-President Seehofer the logic behind our recent proposal for the Multiannual Financial Framework 2014 – 2020.
I know it is difficult in times of budgetary constraints to speak about investments in the future, but I think Europe should also think about the future and we need some kind of investment for the future. That is why we have presented a budget that is designed to create more growth and jobs. At the same time, it is an ambitious, but realistic budget. This was the most important topic of our conversation.
Of course, I also wanted to listen to the Minister-President Seehofer about the situation in Germany and specifically in Bavaria. I know how important the Bavarian economy is for the whole of Europe and I really want to congratulate Bavaria for the great success of its industrial base and for the competitiveness of Bavaria. It is one of the export engines of Europe.
Today I will receive here the board of Siemens – a successful company coming also from Bavaria – so we will also discuss some of those challenges that are so important for Bavaria, for Germany and for all of us in Europe.
And once again I had the occasion to discuss with the Minister-President of Bavaria how important it is to keep the strong support of Bavaria and Germany to our common European project. It is in times of difficulty that we see who are the real friends. It is in times of difficulty that we see those who are really committed to defend of course their national interest, but to do it with a truly European spirit, and I count on Bavaria and on Germany to keep the strong support to our European project.
