José Manuel Durão Barroso
President of the European Commission
Statement by President Barroso following his meeting with Abhisit Vejjajiva, Prime Minister of Thailand
Joint press point
Brussels, 4 October 2010
Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen,
It is my pleasure to welcome Prime Minister of Thailand Mr Abhisit. The European Union is a long standing friend of Thailand and we follow very closely the evolution of events in this country.
The Prime Minister and I had a very open and constructive discussion notably on the prospects to advance the national reconciliation process. I assured Prime Minister Abhisit of the European Union's full support in this endeavour.
Regarding our bilateral relationship, we discussed the ongoing negotiations on a Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (PCA). I believe it is in our mutual long-term interest to solve the remaining questions and to conclude the negotiations as soon as possible in a good spirit of compromise.
We also reviewed current trade issues. This is clearly a field where there is still considerable untapped potential in our relationship. I understand that Thailand has completed its public consultation on a possible Free Trade Agreement with the EU. We are ready to engage on this when Thailand is ready.
So we have a full agenda ahead of us and we are looking forward for continued progress in our relationship. Let me tell you that I know that the important role that Thailand is playing in the region. I really would like to thank the Prime Minister for his strong support to reinforcement of the relations with the European Union.
