 In December 1984 the Commission decided to grant aid from
 the Guidance section of the EAGGF to projects in the
 framework of a common measure for restructuring, modernising
 and developing the fishing industry and for developing
 aquaculture (1).
 By 31 March 1984, the closing date for the submission of aid
 applications, 666 projects representing aid of around 96,3
 million ECU had been either submitted for the first time or
 brought forward.
 Of the 666 projects submitted, 382 are to receive aid.
 The breakdown per Member State is as follows:

 Those projects have been selected for aid which best respond
 to the objectives and criteria fixed in the above
 regulation. Within the framework of these objetives and
 criteria, a certain priority is given to projects aimeed at
 modernising the existing fleet. With regard to granting aid
 for the construction of new vessels, it was aimed to bringg
 the fishing capacity in line with the stocks so as to
 maintain the conservation of marine resources. With respect
 to aquaculture projects, the principal criteria were
 technical feasibility, markeet acceptability, profitability
 and professional experience of the beneficiary. As projects
 with respect to artificial structures are limited to the
 Mediterranean basin, only France and Italy submitted
 projects.
 Of the 366 projects:
 -  172 concern the construction of vessels
 -  188 concern the modernisation of vessels
 -   18 concern aquaculture projects
 -    4 concern artificial structures.
 The total of the 172 construcctions is in relation to a
 total of 94 withdrawn from fishing activity.
 Of the 8 Belgian projects:
 -  6 concern the construction of vessels; 5 are registered
 in Zeebrugge, 1 is registered in Oostende. This concerns
 the construction of 6 vessels in relation to 1 withdrawn
 from fishing activity.
 -  2 concern the modernisation of vessels (Nieuwpoort 2).
 Of the 52 Danish projects:
 -  4 concern the construction of vessels, 12 vessel will be
 registered in Jutland and 3 on the islands (Bornholm,
 Aeroe, Seeland). With regard to these 4 new construction
 projects 3 of them involve a withdrawal of an older
 vessel.
 -  44 concern the modernisation of vessels; 33 projects
 refer to Jutland and 11 to the islands.
 -  4 concern the establishment of aquaculture projects in
 Jutland (2), Seeland (1) and Bornholm (1).
 Of the 39 Greek projects:
 -  22 concern the construction of vessels mainly for the
 ports in the regions of Attica, Cyclades, Kalamata,
 Ionian Islands, Crete, Thrace, Dodecanese. For all of
 these 22 construction projects an older vessel is
 withdrawn from fishing.
 -  16 concern the modernisation of vessels mainly for the
 ports in the regions of Attica, Crete, Cyclades, Ionian
 Islands, Thessaloniki, Thessaly.
 -  1 concerns an aquaculture project at the Gardikiou of
 Fthiotida.

 Of the 63 French projeectss:
 -  51 concern the construction of vessels: 16 of these
 vessels refer to Bretagne. The remaining refer to Vendee
 and Loire Atlantique (9), Nord and Normandie (11), Sud,
 Ouest, Gascogne (8), thee Mediterranean coast including
 Corse (3) and to 4 projects located in the Overseas
 departments. This concerns the construction of 51 vessels
 in relation to 13 withdrawn from fishing activity.
 -  8 cconcern the modernisation of vessels registered in the
 Bretagne.
 -  1 concerns an aquaculture project situated in Martinique.
 -  3 concern artificial structures situated along the coast
 of Languedoc-Roussillon.
 Of the Irish projects:
 -  5 cconcern the construction of vessels in the counties of
 Cork (2), Galway (1), Donegal (2); the 5 construction
 projects ddo not involve the withdrawal or laying off of
 older vessels.
 -  6 concern the modernisation of vessels in the counties of
 Galway (1), Waterford (2), Kerry (1), Louth (1) and
 Donegal (1).
 Of the 133 Italian projects:
 -  52 concern the construction of new vessels
 -  74 concern the modernisation of vessels
 -   6 concern aquaculture establishments
 -   1 concerns an artificial structure.
    Of the 52 projects for construction of vessels, 10 are
 located in the North of Italy (Liguria, Toscana,     Lazio-
 North, Marche-North, Emilia Romagna, Veneto) and 42     are
 located in the South of Italy (islands off the coast     of
 Toscana, Lazio-South, Camparia, Calabria, Sicilia,
 Sardegna, Riglio, Abruzzi, Molise, Marche-South). This
 concerns the construction of 52 vesselss in relation to
 49 withdrawn from fishing activity.
    Of the 74 projects for modernisation of vessels, 34 are
 located in the North, mainly in the North of Marche and
 40 are located in the South.
    Of the 6 aquaculturee establishments, 3 are situated in
 the North and 3 in the South of Italy. The 1 artificial
 structure is situated along the Ligurian coast.
 Of the 11 Dutch projects:
 -  5 relate to the construction of vessels, registered in
 the provinces of Overijssel (2), Groningen, North Holland
 and South Holland. All 5 construction projects provide
 for a withdrawal of an old vessel from fishing.
 -  4 relate to the modernisation of vessels registered in
 North Holland and South Holland.
 -  2 relatee to aquaculture establishments located in North
 Brabant.
 Of the 59 United Kingdom projects:
 -  22 relate to construction of vessels. This concerns the
 construction of 22 vessels in relation to 2 vessels
 withdrawn from fishing activity.
 -  33 relate to modernisation of vessels.
 -   4 relate to aquaculture.

    35 projects arte located in Scotland (modernisation 20,
 construcction 12, aquaculture 3).
    18 projectss are located in England (modernisation 9,
 construction 9).
    1 project (modernisation) is located in Wales.
    5 projects are located in Northern Ireland (modernisation
 3, construction 1, aquaculture 1).
 Italy .......
    Of the 74 projects for modernisation of vessels, 34 are
 located in the North, mainly of Marche and 40 are located
 in the South.
    Of the 6 aquaculture establishments, 3 are situated in
 the North and 3 in the South of Italy. The 1 artificial
 structure is situated along thee Ligurian coast.
