State aid: Commission approves prolongations of Cypriot bank guarantee scheme and Greek guarantee and bond loan schemes for credit institutions

In two separate decisions the European Commission has found that the prolongation of a Cypriot government guarantee scheme for credit institutions and the prolongations of a Greek guarantee and a bond loan scheme for credit institutions, all until 30 June 2015, were in line with EU state aid rules. The Cypriot original scheme was approved in November 2012. Since then it has been prolonged several times, the last time in June 2014. The Commission has, therefore, concluded that the guarantee scheme is in line with its rules on state aid to banks during the crisis. Similarly, the Greek schemes were initially approved in November 2008. They were also prolonged several times, the last time in in June 2014. In all cases the Commission concluded that the prolonged measures are targeted, proportionate and limited in time and scope. During the application of the extraordinary crisis rules for state aid to banks, the Commission is authorising guarantee schemes on banks’ liabilities for successive periods of six months in order to be able to monitor developments and adjust conditions accordingly. More information is available on the Commission's competition website, in the public case register under the case number SA.40027 (Cypriot scheme) and SA.40030 (Greek schemes).
