High level meeting to coordinate international support for Ukraine

On 8 July, the EU institutions and member states, Ukrainian government and international donors will gather for a High Level Meeting in Brussels to discuss the key priorities and support for Ukraine going forward. "The European Union has been providing wide ranging political, financial and technical assistance to Ukraine's domestic reform process. Other international donors have also been very active. We will meet on 8 July, together with the Ukrainian government, to ensure effective coordination of our common efforts” said European Commission President, José Manuel Barroso.

The meeting will be organised by the European Commission services in cooperation with the European External Action Service and will be chaired by Štefan Füle Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy.

Commissioner wishes Tour de France 'bonne chance'

On Saturday 5 July, the 101st Tour de France cycling race will start in Britain, with the first 'Grand Départ' leg running from Leeds to Harrogate. In total, 22 multi-national teams will compete over 21 stages covering a total distance of 3 664 kilometres in England, Belgium, Spain and France. "The Tour is a real test of sportsmanship, endurance and team work. I wish all the riders the best of luck as they set off on this epic race. I encourage the public to come out and show their support for the teams and I hope the event will inspire people to be more active in their daily lives," said Androulla Vassiliou," the European Commissioner responsible for sport. New cities on the Tour route include Leeds, Harrogate, York, Sheffield, Cambridge, Ypres, Oyonnax, Risoul and Maubourguet Pays du Val d'Adour. The Tour ends in the Champs- Elysées (Paris) on Sunday, 27 July.

Mergers: Commission clears acquisition of Independent Clinical Services Group by TowerBrook Investors

The European Commission has approved under the EU Merger Regulation the acquisition of Independent Clinical Services Group Limited ("ICS") of the United Kingdom by TowerBrook Investors Limited of Cayman Island. ICS provides health, life sciences and social care staffing and services in the UK. TowerBrook is the ultimate general partner of funds managed by Towerbrook Capital Partners L.P., a private equity firm investing in large and middle market companies in Europe and in North America. The Commission concluded that the proposed acquisition would not raise competition concerns, in particular because TowerBrook and ICS are not active in the same product and geographic markets. The transaction was examined under the simplified merger review procedure. Preparation of Economic and Finance Ministers Council, Brussels, 8 July

Vice-Presidents Kallas and Barnier and Commissioner Šemeta will participate in the EU's Council of Economic and Finance Ministers meeting, which will take place in Brussels on Tuesday 8 July. At this first such meeting under the Italian Presidency of the Council, Economic and Finance Ministers will discuss the priorities of the Council in the field of economic and financial affairs for the second half of 2014. Vice-President Barnier will also inform the Council of the state of play of discussions on bank contributions under the Bank Recovery and Resolution Directive/Single Resolution Mechanism. Commissioner Šemeta will report progress to the Council on the negotiations with Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Andorra and San Marino on the revision of agreements signed with these countries on taxation of savings. Ministers will also exchange views on the review of the Europe 2020 Strategy, the EU's long-term growth and jobs plan, which is scheduled for early next year.

Mergers: Commission clears acquisition of RWE Dea by LetterOne

The European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger Regulation to the acquisition of RWE Dea AG of Germany by LetterOne Holding S.A. of Luxembourg. LetterOne is a private investment holding company focussing on investments in the energy and telecoms sectors. RWE Dea is an international oil and gas company active in 17 countries, which owns stakes in approximately 140 active oil and gas licenses and operates natural gas underground storage facilities in Germany. The Commission concluded that the proposed transaction would raise no competition concerns, in particular because the parties' activities do not overlap. The transaction was examined under the simplified merger review procedure. Mergers: Commission clears joint venture between SITA and Remondis in Dutch plastic waste sorting sector

The European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger Regulation to the creation of a joint venture by  Remondis Nederland B.V. ("Remondis ", the Netherlands), ultimately controlled by Rethmann AG & Co. KG (Germany), and SITA Recycling Services B.V., (“SITA”, the Netherlands), ultimately controlled by Suez Environnement Company SA (France). The joint venture will be active in the Netherlands in the sorting of Dutch household plastic waste. The Commission concluded that the proposed acquisition would not raise competition concerns since the joint venture will only have a negligible activity in the EU. The operation was examined under the simplified merger review procedure. Mergers: Commission clears joint venture between Faurecia and Magneti Marelli in automotive supply sector

The European Commission has approved under the EU Merger Regulation the creation of a joint venture by Faurecia, S.A. of France and Magneti Marelli S.p.A of Italy. Faurecia manufactures and supplies automotive equipment, including seating, interior systems, such as insturment panels, acoustic modules, decorative parts in various materials and instrument panel beams, automotive exteriors, such as painted exterior body parts, front end modules and composite structural parts, and emissions control technologies. Magneti Marelli manufactures and supplies high-technology components and systems for the automotive sector, including lighting and powertrain products, electronic and suspension systems and shock absorbers. The joint venture will be active in the EEA in the development, manufacture and supply of certain advanced human-machine interface (“HMI”) vehicle interior products, such as center stacks and overhead consoles, mechanized HMI systems and nomadic devices hardware system integration. The Commission concluded that the proposed concentration would not raise competition concerns, given that there are limited overlaps between the parties' activities. The transaction was examined under the simplified merger review procedure. Mergers: Commission clears joint venture between Sonangol and DTS in the LNG trading sector

The European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger Regulation to the creation of a joint venture by Sonangol Comercializacao Internacional Ltd ('Sonaci') of Angola, ultimately controlled by the Angolan State, and DTS Holdings (Singapore) Pte. Ltd ('DTS') of Singapore, jointly controlled by Trafigura Beheer B.V. and Cochan Ltd. The joint venture will be active in the worldwide trading of liquefied natural gas (LNG). The Commission concluded that the proposed acquisition would not raise competition concerns since the joint venture is expected to have no activity in the EU. The operation was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.
