Mergers: Commission clears acquisition of WME and IMG by Silver Lake

The European Commission has approved under the EU Merger Regulation the acquisition of WME Entertainment, LLC and IMG Worldwide Holdings, Inc. by Silver Lake Group, L.L.C., all US companies. IMG provides sports consulting, multimedia rights management, events management and talent representation to companies and individuals. WME is a talent agency providing representation and advice to clients in sectors including film, television, music, literature, theatre and public speaking. Silver Lake is a global leader in technology investing, with over $ 20 billion in combined assets under management. The Commission concluded that the proposed acquisition would not raise competition concerns because the parties' market shares in the talent representation and other markets where they have related activities are limited. More information is available on the Commission's competition website, in the public case register under the case number M. 7179 .

Mergers: Commission clears acquisition of Swedish oil businesses by DCC Energy

The European Commission has approved under the EU Merger Regulation the acquisition of Qstar Försäljning AB, Qstar AB and Card Network Solutions Europe AB, all of Sweden, by DCC Energy Ltd, of Ireland. Qstar Försäljning supplies a number of motor fuels to and from retail stations, while Qstar distributes non-retail fuels and Card Network Solutions supplies business and payment systems for the gasoline and fuel industry. All three companies are only active in Sweden. DCC Energy is active in the business segments of oil, LPG and fuel cards in a number of European countries. The Commission concluded that the proposed acquisition would not raise competition concerns, because of the parties' moderate combined market shares and the presence of a number of other strong players. The transaction was examined under the normal merger review procedure. More information is available on the Commission's competition website, in the public case register under the case number M.7161 .

Commission welcomes US Court decision to allow the EU to proceed with the case against Reynolds American on tobacco smuggling

The Commission welcomes the decision yesterday by the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in New York City to allow the European Union and 26 Member States to proceed with their civil claims against Reynolds American Inc. (“RJR”) in relation to the illicit trade in cigarettes. Tobacco smuggling is estimated to cost public budgets around €10 billion a year in the EU alone, undermines health policies, and helps to fund even more sinister crimes. The civil litigation against RJR is part of the EU’s continuous efforts to fight the illicit tobacco trade.

Working conditions: new survey reveals deterioration and wide disparities in worker satisfaction

While just over half of European workers perceive working conditions in their country to be good (53%), a majority (57%) nevertheless think that their working conditions have deteriorated in the last 5 years, according to a Eurobarometer survey published today, which looks at how the quality of work has been affected by the crisis. Although most workers are satisfied with their own working conditions (77% on average in the EU), there is a very wide disparity across Member States, ranging from 94% in Denmark to 38% in Greece. Generally, most workers express high levels of satisfaction with their working hours (80%) and health and safety at work (85%).  The results of the Eurobarometer will feed in to discussions at a conference on working conditions taking place in Brussels on 28 April.
