The European Commission has adopted new funding today for a total of €58 million in support of Lebanon. The objective of this newly adopted assistance is to alleviate the impact of the high influx of refugees from Syria. This support includes funds from the recently announced comprehensive assistance package which mobilises an additional €400 million for the consequences of the Syrian crisis.
The EU – its Institutions and its Member States - is the biggest donor of assistance in response to the Syrian crisis both in Syria and in neighbouring countries.
The European Commission today announced new measures to get more freight onto Europe's rivers and canals. The new inland waterways strategy was presented by VP Kallas on board a barge in Strasbourg, in the presence of French Transport Minister Frédéric Cuvillier, as well as MEPs – including Catherine Trautmann, MEP and President of the Port of Strasbourg . Barges are amongst the most climate-friendly and energy-efficient forms of transport but currently they only carry about 6% of European cargo each year. The new proposals intend to realise the unused potential of Europe's 37,000 km of inland waterways. They will enable freight to move more easily and lead to further greening of the sector, as well as encouraging innovation and improving job opportunities.
