Energy Commissioner Oettinger kicks-off Romanian-Moldavian gas pipeline

Helping Moldova to be less dependent from one single gas supplier is the aim of the new gas interconnector between Ungheni (Moldova) and Iaşi (Romania). "This is a historic day", Energy Commissioner Oettinger said during the inauguration of the works in attendance of Prime-Minister of Romania Victor Ponta and Prime-Minister of the Republic of Moldova Iurie Leancă in Moldova today. "We are celebrating that Moldova will be directly connected to the EU gas market. This will enhance its energy security and reduce its dependence from the only supplier it has now". Moldova is to 100% dependent on imported gas from Russia. European gas companies will be able to deliver up to 1/3 of the gas consumption in Moldavia from the end of 2014. Moldavia is thus following Ukraine's path in diversifying its energy supply. Since 2010, Moldova is member of the "Energy Community" which aims to extend the EU internal energy market to EU neighbours. The EU aims to integrate these countries to the EU market by legislation but also by connecting them physically to the European energy market.

A decision confirming the risk areas set up by the Italian authorities in relation to the outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza in poultry farms located in Emilia-Romagna was today adopted by the Commission. At the extraordinary meeting of the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health (SCOFCAH) held yesterday in Brussels, the Italian authorities outlined the very stringent measures adopted to control the disease, reduce its impact on the poultry sector and prevent any potential human health risk. The measures applied in Italy were endorsed by Member States experts and are reflected in today's Commission Decision.
