State aid: the Commission approves the restructuring plan for the PSA Peugeot Citroën group

Following an in-depth investigation (see IP/13/392), the European Commission has concluded that restructuring aid of EUR 571.9 million granted by France to the PSA group is compatible with the internal market. In particular, the updated structuring plan will help to restore the group to viability while limiting the distortions of competition caused by State aid.

The backbone for European science gets stronger: 100Gbps internet for individual researchers

GÉANT , the superfast pan-European research network that helped discover the Higgs Boson, announced today that it could reach speeds up to 2Tbps (terabits per second) thanks to a major network upgrade. From today, capacity of up to 500Gbps is available across the core network. This means individual users across 32,000 universities, higher education institutes, research institutes, schools, libraries, museums, national archives and hospitals can transfer data at speeds of up to 100Gbps.

Eurostat - Flash estimate - July 2013 - Euro area annual inflation stable at 1.6%

Euro are1 annual inflation is expected to be 1.6% in July 2013, stable compared with June, according to a flash estimate from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. Looking at the main components of euro area inflation, food, alcohol & tobacco is expected to have the highest annual rate in July (3.5% compared with 3.2% in June), followed by energy (1.6%, stable compared with June), services (1.4%, stable compared with June), and non-energy industrial goods (0.4% compared with 0.7% in June).

Eurostat Unemployment - June 2013 - Euro area unemployment rate at 12.1% - EU27 at 10.9%

The euro area (EA17) seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate - was 12.1% in June 2013, stable compared with May. The EU21 unemployment rate was 10.9%, down from 11.0% in May. In both zones, rates have risen compared with June 2012, when they were 11.4% and 10.5% respectively. These figures are published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. Eurostat estimates that 26.424 million men and women in the EU27, of whom 19.266 million were in the euro area, were unemployed in June 2013. Compared with May 2013, the number of persons unemployed decreased by 32 000 in the EU27 and by 24 000 in the euro area. Compared with June 2012, unemployment rose by 1.080 million in the EU27 and by 1.129 million in the euro area.
