Nouvelles du rendez-vous de midi de la Commission européenne

Commission issues action call in Davos - with IT sector and telecoms companies - to close digital skills and jobs gap in Europe

Europe faces up to 700.000 unfilled ICT jobs and declining competitiveness. The number of digital jobs is growing – by 3% each year during the crisis – but the number of new ICT graduates and other skilled ICT workers is shrinking. Our youth need actions not words, and companies operating in Europe need the right people or they will move operations elsewhere.

Regulatory pressure gets the ball rolling: Share of women on company boards up to 15.8% in Europe

Today the Commission released mid-term figures on the share of women on boards in publicly listed companies. The new figures show an increase in the number of women on boards to 15.8%, up from 13.7% in January 2012. This breaks down into an average of 17% of non-executive board members (up from 15% in January 2012) and 10% of executive board members (up from 8.9%). An increase in the share of women on boards has been recorded in all but three EU countries (Bulgaria, Poland and Ireland). The new figure represents a 2.2 percentage point increase as compared to October 2011 and is the highest year on year change yet recorded. This boost follows the women on boards proposal that the European Commission adopted on 14 November 2012 ( IP/12/1205 and MEMO/12/860) to introduce a 40% objective for women on boards based on merit. It also reflects the impact of high-level EU discussions about the need for legislation regulating the number of women on boards.

EU Conference on renewed financial assistance to countries wishing to join

The European Commission is today hosting a conference in Brussels to discuss preparations for the new Instrument for Pre-accession Assistance for the period 2014-2020 (IPA II). The conference will focus on how to provide efficient and constructive support to the Western Balkans, Turkey and Iceland on their path towards EU membership.

EU - Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) summit - EU27 trade in goods with CELAC in balance in the first nine months of 2012 CELAC accounts for nearly 7% of EU27 trade in goods

EU27 international trade in goods with the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) has been characterised in recent years by steady growth between 2003 and 2008, a sharp decline in 2009 and a strong recovery since then. EU27 exports to CELAC rose from 66 billion euro in 2009 to 90 bn in 2010 and 101 bn in 2011. Imports increased from 75 bn in 2009 to 96 bn in 2010 and 113 bn in 2011. Between 2003 and 2011, the EU27 has always recorded a trade deficit with CELAC, amounting to 12 bn in 2011. The first nine months of 2012 showed continued growth in EU27 trade with CELAC, with exports growing faster than imports. Exports rose by 16%, from 75 bn in the first nine months of 2011 to 87 bn in the same period of 2012, while imports increased by 2%, from 85 bn to 87 bn. As a result, EU27 trade with CELAC was in balance in the first nine months of 2012, compared with a deficit of 10 bn in the same period of 2011. In the first nine months of 2012, CELAC accounted for just under 7% of EU27 exports and imports.

Nuclear: New cooperation mechanism established between the EU and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)

The first Senior Officials' meeting bringing together officials from the European External Action Service, the European Commission and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) takes place in Brussels today. The discussions focus on enhancing cooperation in all areas relating to nuclear technologies, including safety and security of nuclear energy production and research activities. The cooperation between the IAEA and the EU institutions has grown significantly over the last years, with the EU being a major contributor to the activities of the IAEA, both in terms of financing and technical expertise. Traditionally the cooperation has focused more on non-proliferation and ensuring that all nuclear material is used only for peaceful purposes. After the Fukushima accident, nuclear safety has gained more momentum. Given the scale of the challenges, close coordination between the EU and the IAEA is essential for further strengthening nuclear safety and security worldwide. A joint EU/IAEA statement will be issued after the meeting. The joint statement and further information can be found on the following websites: On external action and energy policy: http://eeas.europa.eu/energy/index_en.htm ; http://ec.europa.eu/energy/international/organisations/iaea_en.htm . Commemoration of Holocaust Remembrance Day in the European Commission, 15:00-16:00, 28 January 2013, Commission headquarters, Berlaymont (central piazza)

The European Commission is commemorating the International Holocaust Remembrance Day with a special ceremony hosted by Vice president of the European Commission Viviane Reding at its Berlaymont building in Brussels. This is the second such commemoration at the Commission's headquarters, which this year features an exhibition entitled "Room 28". Room 28 refers to an actual room in the "Mädchenheim" quarters of the Theresienstadt/Terezin ghetto, where Jewish girls were placed upon their arrival there. Up to 30 young girls aged between 8-16 years of age were forced to live in the confined quarters of only 30 square meters in such Rooms. Between 1942 to 1945, more than 50 girls passed through Room 28. Only 15 of them survived to the end of the Second World War. The Commemoration event in Brussels will be accompanied by a cultural programme of live readings from the Theresienstadt diary of one of the "Room 28 girls", Ms Helga Pollak-Kinsky (pictured below), and music from the original Theresienstadt cabaret "Zwockhaus". More information about the exhibition can be found at: http://www.room28projects.com/index.php/en
