Euro area annual inflation was 2.2% in December 2012, the same as in November. A year earlier the rate was 2.7%. Monthly inflation was 0.4% in December 2012. EU annual inflation was 2.3% in December 2012, down from 2.4% in November. A year earlier the rate was 3.0%. Monthly inflation was 0.3% in December 2012.
Commission clears acquisition of Aurum Holdings by Apollo
The European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger Regulation to the acquisition by AIF VII Euro Holdings LP, ultimately controlled by Apollo Management L.P. ("Apollo") of sole control of Aurum Holdings Limited. AIF VII is an investment fund managed by Apollo Management VII L.P., which is an affiliate of Apollo. Apollo, based in the USA, invests in companies involved in various businesses globally including chemical, cruise line, logistics, paper, packaging and real estate brokerage businesses. Aurum, based in the UK, owns and operates a number of stores in the United Kingdom offering fine jewellery and watches. The operation was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.
Appointment of a Director in the Development and Cooperation – EuropeAid Directorate-General
Michael A. Köhler has been appointed Director "Neighbourhood" in the Development and Cooperation - EuropeAid Directorate-General. Dr Köhler is currently Head of Cabinet to Commissioner Günther H. Oettinger (Energy) and was previously Head of Cabinet to Commissioner Joe Borg (Maritime Affaires and Fisheries). His career in the Commission dates back to 1994, and he has worked on trade, external relations, including CFSP, and maritime policy issues. Michael Köhler is German and earned his doctorate at the University of Hamburg. He is a North Africa and Middle East specialist who has served in the region and has a long record in academic teaching on international relations issues, including at the College of Europe. He is married with three grown-up children (two daughters, one son). The appointment will take effect on 1 March 2013.
