News from the European Commission's Midday Briefing
Nouvelles du rendez-vous de midi de la Commission européenne
Thanks to new European legislation (called the Euro VI norm), effective from 31 December 2012, nitrogen oxides and dust emitted from new types of trucks and buses will be lowered. It means a reduction of 80% in emissions of nitrogen oxides and 66% in particulate matters. In addition to the health and environment, the new legislation will also have a positive impact on industry: the legislation introduces world-wide harmonised test procedures and standards which should help boost European automotive industry exports. In addition, EU automotive legislation is now simpler and becomes effective more quickly - directly applicable regulations have replaced directives, thus eliminating the time required for their transposition into 27 different national legislations.
Euro area annual inflation is expected to be 2.2% in December 2012, the same as in November, according to a flash estimate from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. Looking at the main components of euro area inflation, energy (5.2% compared with 5.7% in November) is expected to have the highest annual rate in December, followed by food, alcohol & tobacco (3.1% compared with 3.0% in November), services (1.8%, compared with 1.6% in November) and non-energy industrial goods (1.1%, stable compared with November).
