In response to the ever increasing scale of the humanitarian crisis, the Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, Kristalina Georgieva, announced today that the Commission will mobilise an additional €30 million in urgent relief assistance. This latest funding will bring the total humanitarian aid funds allocated by the Commission to assist the flood-affected populations to €70 million. On 23 August, Commissioner Georgieva will travel to the affected area in Pakistan and will meet with authorities and relief experts, as well as with people affected by the floods."
The European Commission's Reflection Group ("Comité des Sages") on digitisation launched today a consultation on how best to foster the online presence of cultural heritage. As Europe's creative and cultural sectors undergo a revolutionary transition, innovative solutions are needed to keep up with technological advances and reap their full benefits. The Commission has asked the Reflection Group to look at how best to speed up the digitisation, online accessibility and preservation of cultural works across Europe. Contributions to this consultation will feed into the recommendations the Group will make before the end of the year (see IP/10/456). The consultation will run until 30 September 2010.
Exports of animals and animal products from the European Union to Russia are expected to receive a boost after five new certificates for exports between the EU and the Russian Federation entered into force on August 15. These certificates concern beef with bones, canned and dry petfood and breeding sheep and goats and open up new trade opportunities for European producers.
The President of the European Council, Herman van Rompuy, and the President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, will welcome U.S. President Barack Obama at the next European Union-United States Summit which shall be held in Lisbon, Portugal, November 20.
