Commissioner Malmström welcomes the Parliament's vote on the new EU Home Affairs' Funds 2014-2020

"I am very pleased with today's vote establishing the new financial instruments in the area of Home Affairs: the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund and the Internal Security Fund.

Reducing the number of Funds will improve and simplify the way EU funding is delivered. There will be more flexible rules and less red tape, allowing for a faster and more effective EU response in all our areas of activity.

Altogether, despite the financial crisis, the overall resources of the new Home Affairs Funds have been increased compared to the previous period 2007-2013, to € 6, 9 million. This reflects the growing importance of this policy area at EU level and will ensure adequate support to relevant projects on asylum and migration, effective border management systems, the fight against organised crime, corruption and terrorism", said Cecilia Malmström, Commissioner for Home Affairs.

Background:

Following today's vote by the European Parliament, the Council will have to formally adopt the Regulations establishing the Funds. The Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund and the Internal Security Fund could become operational as of May 2014.

The Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund will focus on migrant flows and the integrated management of migration. It will support actions addressing all aspects of migration, including asylum, legal migration, integration and return.

The Internal Security Fund will support the implementation of the Internal Security Strategy and the EU approach to law enforcement cooperation, including the management of the union's external borders. It will also finance the development of new IT systems, such as the future entry/exit system and the Registered Traveller Programme.
