Press statement by Commissioner Füle following his meeting with the Chairman of the Committee on European Integration in Ukraine's Parliament, Hryhoriy Nemyria
Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Štefan Füle met the Chairman of the Committee on European Integration in Ukraine's Parliament Hryhoriy Nemyria, in Brussels on Monday. He congratulated Mr Nemyria on his election as chairman of this parliamentary committee which is important for the relations with the EU. "I am glad that this Committee will benefit from the experience in European Affairs of Mr Nemyria and of its other members," Commissioner Füle said. He then underlined that he takes the work of the Committee very seriously because of its legitimacy and its contribution to the strengthening of EU-Ukraine cooperation.
During the meeting the current developments in Ukraine and the state of play in EU-Ukraine relations were discussed. Referring to the Council Conclusions on Ukraine from last December, which defined the way forward in the bilateral relations, Commissioner Füle stated: "I am confident that these conclusions provide a good basis both for the government and the parliament in Kyiv, including the opposition to work together constructively on the European modernization of the country. They provide an ambitious goal for the benefit of the Ukrainian people."
The Council Conclusions also confirm EU’s policy of engagement with Ukraine and the commitment to sign the Association agreement provided there is determined action and tangible progress on addressing the issues of selective justice, elections and Association agenda reforms. Commissioner Füle and Mr Nemyria stressed the need for early and determined action in this respect.
Speaking about the domestic situation in Ukraine, Commissioner Füle expressed concern about recent news related to Yulia Tymoshenko as well as investigations involving her close allies, including Mr Nemyria himself.
