Statement by Commissioner Štefan Füle following his meeting with the leader of the Montenegrin Socialist People's Party, Mr. Srdjan Milić

Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy Štefan Füle met today in Brussels with the leader of the Montenegrin opposition party Socialist People´s Party, Mr. Srdjan Milic.

The main focus of their meeting was the recent publications of audio recordings suggesting irregularities in the run-up to the parliamentary elections as well as alleged intentions to influence unduly the voters' list.

Commissioner Füle stressed the importance for the responsible authorities to fully investigate all allegations. "I hope that the parliamentary hearing, which has now been agreed, will raise awareness for the need of a broad political consensus in this respect" he said.

The Commissioner underlined the increasing expectations by the EU towards a country negotiating its accession with regard to the respect for fundamental rights, the functioning of the judiciary and the fight against corruption and organized crime.
