Meeting religious leaders from Ukraine
Brussels (6th March) - Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Štefan Füle met a delegation of the Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations in Brussels on Wednesday. This provided an opportunity to discuss the freedom of thought, conscience and religion, the interfaith dialogue and the situation of the Ukrainian society. "I am very happy about this meeting, it was very enriching for me," Commissioner Füle said after talking to 20 representatives of different faiths. "I take with me their wise words about the realities in Ukraine and about how their believers perceive the European Union," he added. There was also a discussion about the prospects of EU-Ukraine relations in light of the recent EU-Ukraine Summit. "The European Union acknowledges the European aspirations of Ukraine and welcomes its European choice. Our engagement with Ukraine remains firm and cannot be but based on respect for common values. I could only agree with the partners when they said they were the biggest force within the civil society committed to the European future of Ukraine," Commissioner Füle stressed.
