Georgia: Key role for constructive opposition in new parliament

Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Štefan Füle met David Bakradze, the leader of the opposition in Georgia's recently elected parliament. They discussed political developments in the country and the importance of building strong, depersonalised institutions of state to consolidate Georgia's democracy. In this context, they talked about the role of the opposition in parliament. "A strong and constructive opposition has an important responsibility of holding the government to account while refraining from obstructive, polarising politics'', Commissioner Füle said. "On the other hand, the government has to ensure conditions for the rule of law to be applied fairly and with full regard for due process. This is essential in order to allow constructive, pluralistic, parliamentary politics to flourish," he added during the meeting with Mr Bakradze.
