Statement by Commissioner Malmström on the Council conclusions on the Visa Liberalisation Action Plan for the Republic of Moldova
I welcome the fact that the Council reaffirmed today in its Conclusions the EU’s commitment to the shared objective of visa-free travel for the citizens of the Republic of Moldova in due course provided that the conditions for well-managed and secure mobility as set out in the Action Plan on Visa Liberalisation are in place. The Council has concurred with the assessment of the Commission that the Republic of Moldova has fulfilled all the benchmarks of the first phase. I welcome once again the important work done by the authorities of the Republic of Moldova in the implementation of the Action Plan.
The Commission services are in contact with the authorities of the Republic of Moldova with a view to preparing the next operational steps for starting the assessment of benchmarks of the second phase. There is still work ahead as the second phase will be a challenging one in delivering concrete results in the implementation. I strongly encourage the authorities of the Republic of Moldova to continue on this path.
