A further strengthening of cooperation between the European Commission and the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) was discussed by Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy, Štefan Füle, and the President of PACE , Jean-Claude Mignon, at their meeting in Brussels on Thursday. Commissioner Füle expressed his appreciation for the very good and efficient cooperation particularly with regard to the implementation of political criteria, democratic principles, rule of law and human rights in the countries of the enlargement area and in the neighbourhood, as well as in helping these countries to deliver on the aspirations of their people.
The rule of law is the central theme of the latest European Commission Strategy Paper on enlargement and is the subject of close attention of the EU in all countries in the accession process. "We are interested in strengthening our cooperation with the Council of Europe and with the Parliamentary Assembly on these issues. Our interaction especially with the Council of Europe's Venice Commission on this, is going to be even more important in the very near future," Commissioner Füle said. With President Mignon he also discussed in more detail the activities of the EU and Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly in the countries of the Western Balkans, Turkey, Moldova, Ukraine and the Southern Neighbourhood, and the possibilities to intensify the joint impact there in fostering European values and principles.
