Croatia: On the road to efficient and well-functioning judiciary
The Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Štefan Füle met the Croatia's Minister of Justice Orsat Miljenić in Brussels on Tuesday to discuss the country´s final preparations for EU membership in the field of judiciary and fundamental rights. Commissioner Füle welcomed the determination of the Minister to pursue the reform of the judiciary and to maintain the focus on the commitments taken during the accession negotiations. He stressed that a well-functioning judiciary is crucial for Croatia's capacity to apply the EU acquis and to uphold the rights of its citizens. The Minister presented his plans for increasing the efficiency of the Croatian judiciary and they also discussed the issues of the independence of judges and fight against corruption.
With Croatia due to join the EU in less than nine months Commissioner Füle and Minister Miljenić agreed that it is essential to maintain focus on the remaining tasks for a successful and well-prepared accession.
