Statement by Commissioner Štefan Füle following his meeting with Edi Rama, Chairman of the Socialist Party of Albania
The Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Štefan Füle met the Chairman of the Socialist Party of Albania Edi Rama today in Brussels to discuss the latest developments in Albania's EU integration process.
Commissioner Füle commended the real efforts made by both government and opposition to strengthen the cooperation in the context of institutional reforms, which have made possible a number of positive developments in the last months.
He stated that Albania has a real perspective for progress on its European integration path, provided the country ensures the sustainability of political dialogue and delivers a critical mass of concrete results in the 12 key priorities from the Commission's Opinion. Commissioner Füle welcomed the consensual adoption of the revision of the immunities system. Stressing the importance of concrete progress in the field of rule of law, Commissioner Füle underlined that Albania needs to intensify its efforts for the reform of the judiciary and of the public administration.
Reiterating the European Commission's engagement and full support of Albania's European future, Commissioner Füle encouraged Mr Rama to ensure the Socialist Party of Albania continues its constructive cooperation on the reforms which are necessary for the achievement of the national objective of European integration.
