Joint Statement on the Outcome of the EU-India Trade Ministerial

EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht and Indian Commerce Minister Anand Sharma today expressed their satisfaction that negotiations towards an ambitious EU-India Free Trade Agreement are making good progress.

Today's talks were positive with both sides engaging constructively to drive the process forward. Commissioner De Gucht and Minister Sharma agreed to hold another ministerial meeting before the end of the year with a view to concluding the negotiations. To this end, they instructed their negotiating teams to identify possible solutions on all remaining issues in the coming months. A number of intersessional meetings will be held and chief negotiators will also meet again in September to take stock of the negotiations.

Both sides are keen to find results which are mutually acceptable so as to achieve an ambitious outcome which would give an important boost to trade between the EU and India. This is particularly important in the current economic climate.
