EC and EBU: Support for public media in transformation countries
Brussels (25th January) – Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Štefan Füle has met with the President of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) Mr Jean-Paul Philippot and Director General Ingrid Deltenre. They discussed the potential for cooperation between the EBU and the European Commission on capacity-building of the public media in both Enlargement and ENP countries.
"The issue of freedom of expression in the media and the role of public broadcasters is a key policy area for the European Commission in the Enlargement countries as well as in the broader European neighbourhood," Commissioner Füle said. "We and the EBU share the same policy goals of free and independent media and public service broadcasters in these countries and we are therefore exploring ways of achieving these aims in partnership with the EBU," he added recalling that the EBU has been an important ally with wide-ranging, relevant and useful experience.
The EU is already very active in the media domain of the Southern Mediterranean, especially at the bilateral level. The European Commission has just launched the second part of a successful Euro-Mediterranean programme for media development. The main aim is to support the reform of the audiovisual sector and in particular the public broadcasters in those countries where state controlled media has until recently been one of the defining features.
