Tribute to legendary Greek film maker Theo Angelopoulos

Androulla Vassiliou, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, has paid tribute to the award-winning Greek director Theo Angelopoulos, who died in a road accident in Athens yesterday during the making of his latest film.

Angelopoulos, who made some of the defining films of Greek and European cinema including "Days of '36", "Ulysses' Gaze" and "Eternity and a Day" (winner of the 1998 Cannes Palme D'Or), will be "greatly missed" by the film world, said the Commissioner.

Commissioner Vassiliou, who personally knew the director, has sent a letter of condolence to his family and to the Greek Minister of Culture.
