Statement by Commissioner Lewandowski after today's debate in the Council on the EU's draft budget for 2013: "A promising start of the negotiations on the 2013 EU budget"
"I am pleased that the vast majority of delegations stated that they understand that the 6.8% increase in payments we propose for next year's budget stems from previously agreed commitments of EU funding for projects already completed and paid for by Member States. Many Member States also stressed that the EU budget is a tool for job-friendly growth and that Europe needs both fiscal consolidation and investments.
Of course, this was only the first round within the Council but it makes me relatively optimistic for the eventual adoption of a 2013 EU budget with sufficient resources to meet the needs of all Member States and citizens as Europe is slowly working its way out of the current crisis".
