Meeting with Vitaly Klitschko, leader of the Ukrainian Democratic Alliance for Reform
Commissioner Štefan Füle met with Vitaly Klitschko, leader of the Ukrainian Democratic Alliance for Reform (UDAR), on Friday 25 November in Brussels.
The Commissioner welcomed Mr Klitschko's engagement in the fight against corruption at municipal level, as well as his efforts to unite Ukrainian citizens behind core European values such as democracy and economic freedom. He stressed that the civil society and opposition must play an important role if Ukraine is to successfully follow a European path.
More generally, the Commissioner reiterated the EU's commitment to deepening relations with Ukraine, and to finalising the Association Agreement with its Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area. While welcoming last week's cross party adoption of the law on the parliamentary elections by the Ukrainian Parliament, Commissioner Füle expressed at the same time the EU’s strong concern that the rule of law was not being systematically applied in Ukraine. In particular, he highlighted that the procedural flaws in the on-going trials of opposition representatives were symptomatic of politically-motivated justice and acted to undermine democracy and the core European values.
