Message of congratulations from President Barroso to Mr Donald Tusk, Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland
On behalf of the European Commission, I would like to congratulate you very warmly on your designation as the Prime Minister with a task to form a new coalition government.
This has been made possible thanks to the great success your government has achieved in the October elections, when for the first time since 1989 it has received such an overwhelming mandate to continue in power.
The new mandate shows Polish people have appreciated your leadership and trust your ability to steer Poland through the challenges which your country and Europe are facing. Consolidating public finances, boosting growth, cooperating with our neighbours, shaping social policy and, last but not least, rebuilding confidence in the European project – these are the challenges which Member States and European Institutions have to face in unison.
Already during your speech in the European Parliament, at the beginning of the Polish Presidency in the Council of the European Union, you have shown your determination to support more and deeper Europe and you have been implementing it consequently. Your excellent handling of the Presidency workings and strong political leadership has once again reconfirmed that Poland has established itself as a confident and trustworthy member of the European family and a crucial element of the European project, bringing in its unique enthusiasm for Europe which in many parts is missing nowadays.
I am fully aware that the coming weeks, associated with approving the new government will be challenging for you. Wishing you all the success in this delicate and demanding endeavour, I remain confident that we will be able to continue working together in the excellent spirit of collaboration which we have enjoyed so far.
