MEMO/11/744

Brussels, 27 October 2011

Statement by EU Commissioner Cecilia Malmström on the endorsement of the European Parliament of the EU-Australia Passenger Name Record Agreement

"I am pleased by today's decision of the European Parliament to endorse the EU-Australia Passenger Name Record agreement negotiated by the European Commission. Today's vote follows the signing of the agreement by the Council of Ministers and Australia on 29 September. The Council will now take the final step by concluding the agreement on behalf of the EU.

It is a very good agreement that increases security for citizens, provides legal certainty to air carriers while setting robust, transparent and effective safeguards for privacy and protection of personal data.

I appreciate the constructive approach shown by the European Parliament and by the Council of Ministers, and I welcome the positive working relations with the Australian authorities throughout the negotiation process."
