Message of congratulation by President Barroso to Ms Helle Thorning-Schmidt, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Denmark
"On behalf of the European Commission, I would like to warmly congratulate you on your appointment as Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Denmark.
Your Government takes office in one of the most demanding periods of recent decades. The economic situation is of grave concern and promoting stability and a return to sustainable growth must remain top of the European Union's agenda in the coming months and years.
Denmark has an important contribution to bring here and I look forward to working in partnership with you to tackle this challenge, in particular as you assume the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in January. The European Commission will give your Presidency its full and active support as you take forward vital work to promote growth and improve the single market as well as addressing the environmental and social challenges which face the European Union. I also hope that your Presidency will be able to make real progress on the preparation of the next multiannual financial perspective.
I wish you and your Government every success in the demanding months ahead and look forward to welcoming you in person to Brussels very shortly. I am convinced that you and your team will live up to the expectations of the Danish people and continue the longstanding tradition of a constructive and valuable Danish contribution to Europe's progress."
